Light pollution can harm us and block out our ability to see the night sky

We just watched a film called “The City Dark” at channelAustin about the harmful effects of light pollution.  I didn’t realize the amount of bird death due to disorientation during their flying path at night because of the bright city lights in the evening.  Many baby turtles also are disorientated and can’t find the sea after their birth which causes many of them to die of dehydration.  You see the turtles are guided by the night stars and moon towards the water.  When there are city light present they follow those lights instead of the lights in the sky which has been leading them into the sea for thousands of years.   People that work the night shift and are exposed to the night light have a higher risk of cancer.   It could have something to do with our body’s natural cycle.

I really didn’t expect to learn so much from this film.  It really makes me think about my own exposure to night light and how it could the types of effects it could have on my health.

We had a night turn-out today and I am looking forward to our next screening.

Within Reach – Journey to Find A More Sustainable Community-My personal journey

Austin is  a city that prides itself  as being  environmentally friendly, with its bike paths, farmers markets, green related festivals and the sustainable culture in general.    Bike rental stations are popping up in strategic parts of downtown.  Electric “Go cars” are all over the city.

The film “A Journey to Find A More Sustainable Community” immediately caught my attention when I saw a post card at “Recycled Reads” (book store) I knew it would be perfect for Austin Documentary Fans.   This all sounds good, but what is the use of watching films about the environment (Chasing Ice), about the vanishing bee colonies (More Than Honey) and “Within Reach….”  if all we do is watch?  The film was a confirmation of my own sustainability convictions.

Pictured is one of the plots I manage at the school’s community garden

ACC my garden plots

Austin Community College started a community garden for students last semester.   I volunteered to plant and maintain two plots.  Here are a few steps I took.

First, I gathered a load of compost  from home and mixed it with the soil at the plot.   I plated a bell pepper and two tomato plants.  In about a week later about  30 volunteer plants popped up from the ground.  These volunteers consisted of cantaloupes, watermelons and tomatoes.

Two weeks later it was apparent that I would have to move some of them to the larger garden.  They are taking currently growing like there is no tomorrow.   Two doses of compost tea and everyone is happy.

The leaves are very green and healthy which is a good sign they are getting the nutrients they need.    Just yesterday I noticed that the small cantaloupe is now huge.  I found others hidden behind the massive forest I have created.  Perhaps this might be a good camouflage for potential critters and deer.

I noticed a pattern that is happening on my bi-weekly visits to the garden-students are watching, and asking me questions, we are having conversations.  I met a student from Brazil yesterday.  I congratulated him on his countries win in FIFA (soccer).  He said “you know about FIFA?”  I laughed and said “of course I know about FIFA.  He went on to tell me about how he grew up on a farm in Brazil and how nitrogen, potassium etc… was so important for  the tomatoes.  I guess I am doing quite well because my new friend commented on how green all of the leaves looked.  Towards the end of the conversation I gave him a tomatoes I had just picked.   It is so amazing how those tomatoes came from tomatoes I had purchased from the store to make sauce for my homemade pizza.  My friend said “look at this tomato, it isn’t perfect like the ones in the store, that’s how I know it is free of chemicals and all of the modern things used to produce perfect looking vegetables and fruit.”

The next visitor was as enthusiastic as the first.   She wanted to know how this garden was organized and was surprised to hear that students and faculty at ACC all volunteered.  This visitor walked around the garden as if she was in the Botanical Gardens.  Another couple did the same.

Austin Filmmeet super sized and growing

Cherdon, Mistress of ceremony starts off the event
Cherdon, Mistress of ceremony starts off the event

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing a great idea grow from a concept to a major networking event in Austin.  The event is no other than Austin Film Meet, a film industry networking event that takes place the first Monday of every month at the Stomping Grounds (South Austin).

Here is how the event goes.  At 7PM Cherdon makes announcements explaining how the open mike segment works.  Each participant has 1 minute  to promote themselves, their event, project or company.  After everyone gets their turn on the mike,  the network starts.  Soon after musicians hit the stage for a evening  of entertainment.

H. Cherdon Bedford, the  group’s founder has  burned the midnight oil for 6 years.  Witnessing the group’s growth with such a large following is icing on the cake.  Cherdon has created something very special in Austin, TX.  I spoke with her last night and one memorable quote gave me a  warm and fuzzy feeling inside.  Here is what was said after asking her about the mission of the group- “it feels so great when you see two people who met at an Austin Film Meet event 5 years ago who were total strangers sit next to each other tonight and are collaborating on a project.”

There were two people present who I have collaborated with.  One was Ben Snyder of “The Show,”  and Sophie Rousmaniere was in attendance, the filmmaker of the documentary “Yellow Fever.”  A film Austin Documentary Fans supported as a group.  Sophie has big plans for Yellow Fever.  Looks like it will be airing on TV in the fall.

Last night’s event was the largest I have ever seen.  There are plans to move to a new location, since the Film Meet has grown larger than the capacity of the Stomping grounds.   I am looking forward to new things Austin Film Meet has in store for the city of Austin.

Youtube Channel just launched with interview

See my interview with Alka from Indie Meme who talks about the upcoming film “The Gulabi Gang,”  (May 18th).  All of the information you need to know about ADF, the film, location etc… is in the video.  Get your phones ready I added a few QR codes to the video so you can jump right to the sites mentioned .

Alka and I met at the new Domain Whole Foods in Austin to discuss the film a few days ago.  We planned to meet, but not to interview.  I decided at the last minute to give my new Tascam recorder a go.   I thought this would be a nice video for our youtube location (which had been dormant for months).   I met Alka about a year ago when Indie Meme was just getting started.  She joined ADF and the rest is history.

It’s that time again we ADF needs to pay our quarterly Meet-Up fees.  You donations are always welcomed.  Go to the top right on our website and hit the “donation” button.  As you can tell, your support is being put to good use.

A little bit more about the documentary “Gulabi Gang” and why we are supporting the film

rahul desai review

Highly anticipated film that I can’t wait to see this coming weekend.  Gulabi Gang has won numerous awards so I am sure it is a winner.   I like the fact that the film is about empowerment as appose to the typical victimization type of film we are used to seeing when dealing with gender based issues.   To my Austin Documentary Fans out there let’s show our support for our fellow ADF member who is trying to support  International Cinema through her company Indie Meme.

Gulabi Gang deals with a universal topic that is  socially relevant.  That is what we do -support folks like Alka, who are bring diverse films to our Austin film community.

Synopsis
Enter the badlands of Bundelkhand in central India and you have entered a place of desolation, dust and despair. This film follows the Gulabi Gang, an unusual group of rural women led by the energetic and charismatic Sampat Pal. They travel long distances to fight for the rights of women and Dalits. Often they encounter resistance, apathy and corruption, even ridicule. Sometimes whole villages connive against them to protect the perpetrators of violence. While we see Gulabi Gang members struggling against gender violence and state corruption, we also see the flip side – members getting sucked by the trappings of their new found power.
Breaking away from the deep-rooted patriarchal structure is a challenge even for the most fearless amongst them. The film pulls us into the center of these blazing conflicts and uncovers a complex story about the nature of power itself.
